11 Mistakes People Make When They’re Starting a Home Remodel

December 19, 2022by Remodeling Consultants

Read Carefully; You’re Going to Want to Avoid all of These

1. They Don’t Get Several Estimates

Always get at least three – and make sure they include the entire scope of work. If all of them are over your budget you may need to readjust your expectations. But don’t pick a remodeler on cost alone. Make sure you speak directly to their references, and have a list of questions when you call.

2. They Don’t Look at Before and After Pictures

A good remodeler will love transforming a boring space into a beautiful one, and will want to show you his or her accomplishments. Ask each of the remodelers you’re interviewing for their before and after pictures, so you can judge their work and style for yourself.

3. They Don’t Prepare for the Unexpected

Every project has a unique history, often not revealed until demolition begins. Maybe a small window can’t become the large one you want because of a hidden pipe in the wall. Or maybe are three layers of flooring, not one, beneath your kitchen. Understand that remodeling a home is a bit like an archeological dig, and you may need to work creatively with what is learned.

4. They Listen to Too Many Opinions

It’s OK to ask a few people you trust to help you conceive of what your remodel should include. But ask too many people, and you may find yourself mired in a sea of differing  opinions, feeling confused and unsure.

5. They Don’t Inspect the Work Along the Way

You may not want to annoy the remodeler by hanging around too much, but do make it clear that you would love to see how the project is going on a frequent basis.

6. They Try to Do it Themselves

If you know you’re really prepared to do a renovation – and have been properly trained in safety – then you could have some cost savings. But, if you’re not familiar with the equipment, don’t have experience, and don’t have all the time you need, you could end up paying more in the long run because you may have to hire someone to fix your errors.

7. They Don’t Negotiate

When the economy is down, material goods can be less expensive. If a contractor wants your project he or she may be willing to pass the savings on to you. So don’t be afraid to haggle a little – but not too much or you may lose a good remodeler.

8. They Don’t Know How Much of Their Own Personality to Inject

If you’re planning to sell your home within a few years of a remodel, and want to preserve as much of your investment as possible, you may want to keep the project more conventional. But if you’re planning on staying put for a while, then have fun with color and personal touches and make it truly your own.

9. They Don’t Know How to Work With their Home’s Style

If you live in a contemporary structure, and try to renovate it to be very traditional, the renovation could end up looking forced. On the other hand, if you have a traditional home, a modern addition or room renovation could be really interesting.

10. They Listen to a Few Too Many Opinions

It’s OK to ask those people you trust the very most to help you conceive of what your remodel should include. But if you ask too many people, you may find yourself confused and unsure, and end up something that isn’t true to your original vision at all.

11. They Wait Too Long

If you put off a remodel until you’re about to sell your home, you won’t get to enjoy it. Remodel for the pleasure of you and your family, not just to please some future owner.
