Moving from apartment in NYC life to suburban life in Westchester County

November 14, 2020by Remodeling Consultants

If you live in NYC and are considering moving to Westchester County, read on to find out some of our top tips to make your transition as smooth as possible. For some people, moving is an exciting adventure. But for others, especially those who have lived in the city their entire life relocating can be stressful. It’s important to remain calm.

Staying relaxed and looking forward to a new future should be on the top of your list. You’ll have many things to take care of, so it’s essential to keep an optimistic attitude.

Three ways to do that is if you’re not sure where you want to live, rent first. That gives you more time to make the big decision of purchasing a home. Be selective about what you take with you. If you don’t love it – don’t move it. Also, reserve your moving truck as soon as you can because they get rented out fast.

Make your list of non-negotiables – this will be different for everyone, whether you’re single or have a family. But, take the time to consider what’s important. Here are a few areas to look at: the cost of housing, distance to the city, commute time, schools, taxes, town culture, and neighborhood culture.

Budgeting For Westchester County

Topping the list is budget, have a clear idea of what you can afford, whether you’re renting or buying. If you’re buying, find out what the taxes are because that will make a significant difference in your mortgage payment.

Your income may stay the same, but if there’s a chance it won’t, it’s better to know that before you move. Will you need to find a new job? If you’re self-employed, will moving change anything?

Also, consider other expenses. Find out what the county and property taxes are. If you’re considering a specific house or apartment, ask how much utilities cost. Budget in commuting and parking costs if you’re going into the city.

Get to know the real estate prices in the areas you’re interested in if you’re considering buying within the next three years. You may not want to relocate and fall in love with an area only to discover you could never afford to live there.

Commuting From Westchester County

If you’re still working in the city, travel time should be on the top of your list. Although you may be working from home now, that may change. Wherever you’re planning to move to, do a test drive first to see how long it will take to get to work. Know what public transit options are available, including the cost and availability of parking.

If you’ve always worked in the office, but now everyone is working from home before you move – confirm you won’t be required to come back into the office. If possible, get an agreement in writing from HR. Choosing an area that’s a bit farther out from the city could be a problem if your boss decides they want you in the office rather than working from home.

Towns & Schools in Westchester County

Get to know the towns – make a list of every neighborhood you’re considering and go visit them. Even if you’re familiar with them already, it’s not a bad idea to take a drive and look with a new set of eyes.

Know the Schools – if you have children or are planning to have some in the future, consider the schools, especially if you’re purchasing a new home.

Three school districts to consider are

  1. Scarsdale Union
  2. Bronxville Union
  3. Rye Neck Union
