Barn doors are coming back in a major way, and for more than just their unique style. It has been shown that adding barn doors to your home can help it sell faster and at a higher price. Zillow analysis has found that homes get sold up to 57 days quicker when barn doors are added to the interior. Homes with barn doors also averaged selling at 13 percent above the expected asking price.
Why Install These Doors?
These sliding barn doors satisfy the desire for an upscale look, and also serve as a functional piece that closes off large spaces. These doors are typically added to divide up two or more areas, such as the living and dining room. They are simple to install and customizable because they come in a variety of colors, sizes, and styles. Although this trend gained appeal for its rustic design that actually imitates barn doors, modern styles
are also available.
Different types of barn doors are available depending on the size of your room entrance and available wall space. Bi-parting doors are often used for large openings with limited wall space. Singular barn doors, which are the most commonly used, slide left or right. These doors are often used for standard size openings and require a decent amount of wall space. Meanwhile, bi-passing doors are optimal if you don’t have a lot of wall space; these doors are able to pass over one another instead of the sliding over the wall.
Is This Trend For You?
Note that barn doors aren’t ideal for people who want a lot of privacy. Like pocket doors, there is not a lot of sound isolation. Also, these sliding doors are known for being a bit noisier than pocket doors. However, barn doors are considered easier to close and lock (if you choose to add a lock) compared to pocket doors.
Cost is another big factor to consider when adding sliding barn doors to a home. Taking door price, hardware used, and installation fees into account, the cost can be considerable. These doors should definitely be looked at as an investment; one that has the potential to increase your property value.
